Well guys, it’s been a long couple of weeks, and my race is on Saturday! These are photos I took on my last run before THE BIG RACE!! I’m getting nervous just thinking about it. I picked up my number bib tonight, so it’s officially official.

It’s going to be a cold morning on Saturday, but I’m really looking forward to running in chilly temperatures.

See you at the finish line!

Hey, remember that half-marathon I ran a while back? Well, I did it! I ran the Charlotte Race-Fest half-marathon on April 16, 2011! I didn’t think it was actually going to happen, but it did! I was so nervous the night before because of the impeding storm, and worried that the race would be cancelled. What was I going to wear? Shorts? Longer pants? All around freaking out.
The first thing I did when I woke up was to check the website to see if the race was still happening. RACE WAS A GO!
The race started at 7:30, so I made sure to get there a little bit early to warm up. I was still pretty nervous because of the weather, never having run through rain. The idea of sloshy shoes and lightning bolts were not appealing, AT ALL! About 15 minutes into the race huge raindrops started to fall, but it really didn’t bother me. Surprisingly, it actually felt kind of good and helped to keep me cool.
The toughest part of the race was at mile 2 (what have I gotten myself into?!) and mile 11 (where is that finish line??!). The first half of the race went pretty smoothly, and then I hit mile 8 and THE HILL! Oh that hill nearly did me in. The wind and rain also picked up at this point, so that didn’t help either.
When I finally crossed the finish line, I grabbed my medal (yay medal!) and sat on the sidewalk. Guys, I cried. A little bit. But yes, I did cry. I wasn’t sad, I wasn’t happy, I think I was just relieved that I finished and didn’t pass out and/or puke and/or quit. The bottom of my feet felt like they were on fire and my lower back was incredibly tight, and all I wanted to do was eat French toast at IHOP!
So, would I do it again? Probably. I may sign up for the Wilmington half-marathon in November. It feels good to have a solid goal to work towards. And oh yeah, French toast is an excellent motivator!

I was looking at my blog today, and I noticed that my last post was January 18…it’s being kind of a while, non?
What have I been doing? Well, last December I signed up to run a half-marathon in April, so between freelance work, work work, and starting to train for the race, I’ve been a busy gal. Even though the race is 2 months away, I’m starting to feel a bit antsy, because I’ve never, ever done something like this. Not even a 3k or a 5k or a 10k. I’m not really sure what to expect, I hope I won’t be the last one to cross the line, will I be able to finish in the allotted time, holycowwillmylegsgiveout?
I decided to run a half-marathon because I wanted to have a concrete goal to work towards, not just simply to lose weight (although that’d be a nice bonus). I wanted to take the focus off the whole weight issue and focus more on getting strong and toned. I can definitely feel my muscles differently, especially my abs. Because if not now, when? Turning 30 has shifted something, I’m not sure I can articulate it, but I feel more determined and committed now. It’s a little bit easier to say no to that extra cookie, and to eat more healthy foods.
What’s something that you’ve done to change your lifestyle? I’d love to hear how one small change led to something that you never expected.
